Common fennel can grow up to 6 feet tall, but is often shorter than that. The smooth, dark green leaves are finely dissected with very narrow lobes, giving a feathery appearance to the foliage.
 
It has a fresh, aromatic anise flavor, and it can be eaten raw, sautéed, roasted, or even added to soups and sauces.
